Notifications and Contact Methods

You can add communication methods to your account and receive notifications through text message, email, etc. For example, students can receive a text with their test scores, and faculty can receive an email when they have a new assignment submission to grade.

Adding Contact Methods to Receive Notifications

In Canvas, you can add contact methods to receive notifications. Contact methods allow you to select how you want to be notified when various events occur within a course. Notifications are applied to all courses in Canvas. Canvas supports notification through email, SMS text message, and Twitter.

Once you add contact methods, you can set your own Notification Preferences to select how often you want to be notified of course events.

Setting Canvas Notification Preferences

Canvas includes a set of default notification preferences you can receive for your courses. However, you can change the default settings by setting your own notification preferences. These preferences only apply to you; they are not used to control how course updates are sent to other users. Notifications are sent as one of four delivery types: notify me right away, daily summary, weekly summary, or don't send. If you change a setting, the change is made immediately to your account.

Notification settings apply to all of your courses; you cannot change settings for individual courses.

You may be able to reply directly to email notifications outside of Canvas. Replies are updated in the Canvas Inbox. However, please be aware that attachments added as part of an external reply are not included with the message shown in Canvas.

Setting up Calendar Notifications

This tutorial will show you how to get reminder notifications about upcoming assignments. This is done by syncing your Canvas calendar with your Google calendar or another similar calendar. This tutorial shows how to sync the Canvas calendar with a Google calendar. You can use your SUU student Google account if you would like.

Step 1

Log into Canvas and select Calendar in the pane on the left.

Select Calendar Feed in the bottom right corner.

Highlight the URL and copy it.

Go to and log in. Select the arrow next to Other calendars in the pane on the left and select Add by URL.

Paste the URL into the text box and then select Add Calendar.

You will see events from your Canvas calendar now appearing in your Google calendar. To toggle the Canvas calendar on and off, select the box next to the calendar name in the pane on the left.

To change the name of the calendar, select the arrow next to the calendar in the pane on the left and then select Calendar settings. Type a new name into the Calendar Name textbox and then select Save.

To change how, when, and how often you get notifications, select the arrow next to your calendar in the pane on the left and then select Edit notifications.

Use the drop-down menus to edit your notifications. Select Add a notification if you would like to get multiple notifications about the same assignment. Select Save to keep your changes.
