Description:

The sections of the University Journal publication and SUUNews.com webpage are:

  • News- Responsible for the impartial coverage of events around school and features about interesting people, programs and trends.
  • Opinion- Writes the editorials and manages columns, letters and op-ed articles.
  • Accent- A focus on the fine arts and creative culture of Southern Utah University.
  • Outside- Outdoors section with regular features pertaining to the university of the parks.
  • Sports- Writes features of prominent SUU student-athletes and coaches, covers major developments in SUU sports.
  • Campus Life- Pop culture focused with a focus on trends college students are interested in.

Duties of a section editors includes the following responsibilities:

  • Assist the Editor-in-Chief in determining story coverage;
  • Supervise, train, and motivate reporters;
  • Actively and aggressively seek and assign stories for respective section; enforce and meet deadlines;
  • Format and design assigned section;
  • Review, edit, proof, and take responsibility for all copy in assigned section;
  • Attend staff meetings including virtual meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
  • Must have previous experience writing for a publication.
  • Should be familiar with AP Style.
  • Should be familiar with Google Drive.
  • Must be able to work on tight deadlines.
  • Must be able to work independently as a self-starter.
  • Completed and passed COMM 1130 Writing for Communication.
