Description:

The Lowell Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah fosters lifelong service and civic participation by engaging the University with the greater community in action, change and learning. The Center provides a dynamic, high-energy campus location for students, faculty, staff, and community partners to convene and collaborate on projects that improve life in the community and educate people for their civic and social responsibilities. Community engagement has been strategically identified by the University of Utah as an effective way to create deeply engaged learning opportunities for students.

Position Summary: The Bennion Center seeks a Community Engaged Learning Coordinator to lead and strengthen the Bennion Center Scholars program and community-based educational initiatives. This professional will mentor students as they move through a rigorous co-curricular community engagement experience that culminates in a capstone project, final presentation, and designation on students’ academic transcripts. The CEL Coordinator will forge partnerships with faculty and community agencies to support each scholar’s learning and engagement. Further, this team member will collaborate with a broad and diverse committee who will advise and help guide the program.

WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time, 40 hours/week, dayshift.

COMPENSATION: $42,000 to $45,000/year. Strong benefit package including tuition reduction program, retirement and health plan options.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Service: ● Mentor and guide students with the intention to make meaning of their service, to understand the social systems in which they serve, and become committed, active and engaged citizens. ● Coordinate and organize Bennion-Hinckley Forums and Issues & Action Lunches. Leadership: ● Recruit, select, train, evaluate and lead the Bennion Center Scholar Leadership Team in assignments and events such as orientation, trainings/retreats, check-ins, socials and annual Service Celebration. The Team provides mentoring to the several cohorts in the program. The key programmatic areas that the Scholar Leadership Team members oversee consist of: retention, outreach, events, capstone support, community partner relations, and student board. ● Create and implement a vision for the next era of BC Scholars. Perhaps a certificate/minor/or other academic value-added credential. ● Co-teach or serve as teaching assistant for the required leadership and capstone courses. Respond to all Scholar reflection pieces and assignments in order to facilitate deeper and broader experiences for students. ● Serve as key assessment team member. Collect and analyze data pertaining to civic competencies across Bennion Center programs including the Bennion Center Scholars program. ● Work with Assessment team to ensure timely collection and dissemination. Partnerships: ● Foster new relationships with academic departments across campus to deepen commitments to the BC Scholars program. ● Foster partnerships with community partners, faculty and students to present, evaluate and improve Scholars educational series and program. ● Remain mindful of community partners needs and forge new community engagement partnerships. Engaged Scholarship: ● Coordinate all aspects including recruitment, orientation, governance and assessment of the Scholars program to increase the quality and enrollment of the Scholars program. ● Provide ongoing mentorship and advising to individual Scholars; especially during their work on capstone projects. ● Track and update progress of all Scholars each semester. ● Communicate with Registrar’s Office and Graduation Committees to coordinate graduation ceremony recognition and ensure each scholar is awarded the Bennion Center Scholar designation on their academic transcript. ● Work with the chair to plan and implement the BC Scholars Advisory Committee meetings to ensure the support of the Scholars program is continuously reviewed and improved as well and plan educational engagement events (e.g., Issues & Action/ Bennion-Hinckley Forums). Budget: ● Track and monitor budget for Scholars program; this includes all revenues and expenses related to the program and its advisory committee including the Scholars Leadership Team development.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency required. Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

PREFERENCES: ● Master’s degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency required; ● Demonstrated ability to think strategically, network, innovate, and to work both independently and as part of a dynamic and fast-moving team; ● Organizational and communication skills are paramount. Must be able to organize diverse tasks for and communicate effectively with multiple types of stakeholders
