WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The College of Architecture & Planning seeks an Academic Success Advisor to advise and support a diverse population of students in achieving academic success in the degree programs hosted by the college, with particular emphasis on the college’s undergraduate programs. Incumbents are expected to possess extensive knowledge about academic programs, policies, and procedures and student support services. The ability to be sensitive to the needs of diverse student populations, such as non-traditional/underrepresented students, students of color, and students with disabilities is a necessity. Incumbents must also be able to interpret student needs and determine when referral to other university resources is appropriate.

Areas of Primary Responsibility: 1. Coordinates co-curricular (non-instructional) components of the college’s Design Foundations program for first- and second-year students, which includes peer mentoring and tutoring programs, regular group orientation and support sessions, and social and networking events with local professionals. 2. Establishes and supports a Transfer Student Interest Group with students at Salt Lake Community College who are interested in pursuing degrees in architecture, planning, or design. 3. Employs Civitas Learning and other analytical platforms to assess and guide college student success efforts. 4. Oversees class scheduling for the college. 5. Supports an emerging continuing education program for professionals in architecture, planning, design, and related fields.

Areas of Shared Responsibility with other College Staff: 1. Meets with students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, major exploration, course planning and registration, transfer credit evaluation/substitution or advanced degree requirements. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs. 2. Coordinates and/or participates in the advising-related portion of new/transfer student and parent orientation sessions. 3. Maintains students’ academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during each visit. 4. Works with other college staff to liaison to various university offices, including Admissions, Orientation, Academic Advising, Disability and Access Services, and others.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a communications, education, social science, or design-related field or equivalency required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.

PREFERENCES: Previous experience in an advising, counseling, or teaching environment is preferred.
