Description:

Internal Medicine seeks a highly experienced senior laboratory specialist (or lab specialist depending on experience – please apply to separate Lab Specialist posting) to participate in the department chair’s research program, which is focused on the genetic epidemiology of inherited forms of prostate cancer. The specialist will perform and direct all relevant laboratory techniques and procedures for genome wide association studies, linkage analysis, next generation sequencing, and germline/tumor studies. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate who can work independently.

COMPENSATION: $39,300 to $72,700/year. Strong benefit package including tuition reduction program, retirement and health plan options. WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm and as needed. RESPONSIBILITIES: The senior laboratory specialist will perform and direct all relevant laboratory techniques and procedures for genome wide association studies, linkage analysis, next generation sequencing, and germline/tumor studies. The primary responsibilities of this position are to: 1. Isolate and prepare human DNA for exome and candidate gene sequencing. 2. Manage research databases and review records to select specimens for inclusion in different research studies. Compile relevant clinical, familial and epidemiologic data on subjects. 3. Receive biological samples from participants and prepare/store genomic DNA 4. Coordinate the genetic analysis of samples with internal core facilities and external sites. 5. Prepare specimens for shipping and tracks samples sent and received. 6. Perform and direct specialized and complex lab tests and experiments. 7. Assist the Principal Investigator in the design, implementation and performance of new protocols and procedures as well as the modification of existing techniques. 8. Review scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information concerning experimental procedures. 9. Make advanced statistical calculations, analyze data and prepare reports summarizing research results. 10. Prepare, operate and maintain complex and highly specialized laboratory equipment. Instruct others in their use. 11. Maintain a log of supplies used in procedures. Receive and inspect of raw materials, and order and stock of materials and equipment. 12. May supervise, train and review the work of laboratory personnel. 13. May prepare equipment and rooms for studies. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment. 14. Assist with preparing budgets. 15. Apply independent judgment in order to assess the validity of data collected and to interpret results. 16. Devise, refine and implement new techniques or modifies existing processes by utilizing advanced knowledge. 17. Directs the daily operation of the lab including hiring and training subordinates. 18. May coauthor research papers and publications. 19. May represent the University by presenting research and findings to peers at conventions and conferences.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific discipline or equivalency, plus four years of related full-time laboratory experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

PREFERENCES: Prior laboratory research experience in molecular genetics. An advanced degree in molecular genetics or related field. Prior experience with DNA sequencing and array-based analyses. Prior experience working with related University of Utah core facilities.
