Description:

This reporter will join an enterprise team of seasoned journalists producing in-depth stories designed to move the needle on public policy and opinion in Utah and beyond. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to develop stories beyond the routine. We are looking for someone who can ask deeper questions and leverage data to do thoughtful enterprise work that shines new light on issues that affect individuals, families, and communities in Utah and around the country.

Qualifications:

Have at least five years of reporting experience

Have a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, political science or a related field

Have an ability to find, understand and use data to identify and drive stories

Produce writing that is thoughtful, informative, rigorous, enlightening, engaging and entertaining

Can identify storylines and narratives as you sift through documents, data and multiple in-depth interviews

Have a "digital-first" mindset and a creative, innovative capacity to envision ways to tell stories through video, interactive graphics, and other media

Know how to establish a strong social media presence and following

Are willing to take regular feedback and editing from multiple editors

Can work on deadline and balance multiple projects at one time, some short-term and some long-term

We want someone who:

Is an avid news consumer actively engaged in understanding multiple points of view

Instinctively knows how to find interesting stories based on current events and issues

Is an analytical, critical thinker who can see big pictures as well as small details and weave them seamlessly together

Is a curious and tenacious reporter who will ask tough questions and not give up until answers surface and the story lands

Is a self-starter who requires minimal supervision and is motivated by a love of the story

Understands the Deseret News' mission to be a trusted voice of light and truth for a growing local and national audience.

Things you'll get to do:

Produce long-term in-depth and investigative stories with a focus on moving the needle

Rigorous reporting on solutions to social problems in the vein of the Solutions Journalism Network: https://www.solutionsjournalism.org/

In addition to long-term projects, write news features and analysis on a regular basis, as well as help with breaking news from time to time

Collaborate with a creative team of photographers, graphic designers, web producers and other writers and editors to tailor content to multiple platforms, from web to print to TV

Represent the Deseret News in public forums talking about the issues you're reporting on
