Description:

The Office of the State Auditor seeks a qualified candidate to work as an intern for the Local Government Division. The Office provides Utah taxpayers and government officials with an independent assessment of financial operation, statutory compliance, and performance management for state and local government, and makes recommendations to improve the effectiveness of programs and efficiency of operations.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under supervision of Local Government Division management and State Auditor, performs various projects related to local government financial and statutory compliance. Projects relate to financial reporting, budgeting, digital production, and information systems. Analyzes, summarizes, and reviews data; identifies potential issues; and interprets results, reports findings, and makes recommendations. Researches issues using statute, professional standards, and best practices. Creates or edits reports and other documents. Completes various Local Government team assignments. Receives career and educational mentorship from management.

POSSIBLE PROJECTS:

Depending on applicant competencies, a variety of projects are available for selection as a core project. See examples below:

• Research and calculate the cumulative debt burden carried by local governments • Research and calculate total revenues and expenditures of local governments • Evaluate financial reporting tool used by lower budget entities o Follow-up on repeat deficiencies o Prepare help guides • Create a new active form for local governments to report data o Implement a macro that automatically:  Imports checkbook registers  Uploads information to Utah Public Finance Website • Consult on redesign of: o Division training modules o Division publications (manuals, reporting tools, help guides, etc.) • Design materials and scoring guides for new audit program

TIMEFRAME:

Dates: January-April 2018 May-August 2018 September-December 2018

Hours: Flexible, depending on office needs and applicant abilities.

COMPENSATION:

$10.00-$20.00/hour, DOE. The Office will work with you to determine if credit hours may be earned with your educational institution, if applicable. This position is a time-limited position with no benefits.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Occasional exposure to stressful situations and deadlines. Work is completed in an indoor office environment. Frequent sitting; occasional lifting of office supplies weighing 10 pounds.

Equipment Used: Required regular use of computer, copier, and telephone.

Qualifications:

Education: The position is open to college undergraduate and graduate students.

We are open to an array of academic disciplines. Majors or programs may include: Information Systems, Digital Production, Political Science, English, Economics, and Public Administration. If you are interested in improving oversight and efficiency in local government, this internship is for you!

Knowledge/Skills: Effective verbal and written communication. Ability to work independently, but also coordinate with and take direction from team members.

Computer software including: • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) or equivalent • Video Production • Salesforce
