The Utah Conservation Corps (UCC) in partnership with the USDA Forest Service Intermountain Region is advertising for one Soils Resource Assistant (RA). This is a full-time or part-time (20-40 hrs/week) position starting in June 2017 for a minimum 960 hour contract with the potential for extension. The Utah Conservation Corps (UCC) is Utah's award-winning, and nationally- recognized statewide Conservation Corps headquartered in Logan, Utah at Utah State University's main campus. The UCC has been Utah's largest environmental AmeriCorps program since 2001, completing service work on public lands, in communities, and with various organizations throughout the state. The Position

This position will be located in the Manti-La Sal Supervisor’s Office in Price, Utah. This positon will provide support to the Forest Plan Revision Team by focusing on updating the Forest’s database and conducting field trips to verify data. Coordination with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will be part of the job duties. The Assistant will also participate in Forest Plan Revision meetings and review documents related to soils. There will be opportunities to participate in the development of the new Forest Plan, specifically for the soils topics. This is primarily an office based position with occasion field time.

Assignments for the intern during their entire experience include:

·       Assist ecologist in organizing trend studies into vegetative community types (dominant & subdominant).

·       Assist NRCS with development of ecological site descriptions for sagebrush communities on forest.

·       Assist with data entry into National Soil Information System (NASIS).

·       Update corporate vegetation monitoring database.

·       Assisting with field inventory of soils and vegetation.

·       Participation in Forest Plan Revision tasks.

No housing is provided. The position may require travel to the field, meetings, and district offices. A travel stipend will be provided.


Program Benefits

·       $15.00/hour along with health care coverage (if needed), workers compensation, and FICA/Medicare.

·       Minimum of 960hr contract with potential to extend

·       The Resource Assistant will have special Federal Government hiring authority upon completion of their 960 hours of service for up to 2 years.


Position Requirements

·       A background in natural resources, preferred skills in soil taxonomy and/or range ecology.

·       Experience with Microsoft Access Databases, preferred.

·       Experience with ArcGIS, preferred.

·       Regular and reliable attendance and dependability, and ability to work independantly.

·       Excellent written and oral communication skills.

·       Excellent organizational and computer skills.

·       Independent, self-motivated, creative, and resourceful individual able to work with diverse groups of people.

·       A cooperative manner and the ability to serve as part of a team, but the ability to work independently.

·       Valid state driver’s license and good driving record. Driving a government vehicle as required for the position.

·       U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check.

Ability to commit to a 960 hour contract
