Since 2014, The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at Northern Arizona
University has been preparing 1st and 2nd year
undergraduate students to become the next generation of diverse environmental
professionals in a more inclusive conservation movement. This two-year, trans-
disciplinary program creates a community of learning and support as scholars
explore the intersection of conservation science, traditional knowledge,
policy, advocacy, and management.
Highlights:
- $8000 stipend over 2 years, and all travel and housing costs covered.
- 3 NAU credits each summer, tuition waived.
- Community of 20 diverse scholars from across the country.

1st Summer Immersion Program
You will spend 8 weeks with 19 other scholars exploring the biologically and
culturally diverse Grand Canyon region while developing knowledge and skills
in large landscape conservation, leadership, and communication.
Winter Retreats
Each January you will reconnect for a weeklong retreat featuring workshops led
by conservation professionals on personal growth, career development,
solution-oriented approaches to conservation, and communication and
networking.
2nd Summer Research Internship
You will work in pairs on an 8-week research internship designed around
individual interests with one of our partnering non-profit, academic, and
government entities nationwide
Academic Year Support
Students will engage in online, monthly meetings during the academic year and
receive one-on-one phone mentoring with DDCSP NAU staff.
Eligibility
Doris Duke Conservation Scholars are U.S. citizens or DACA recipients enrolled
at colleges or universities in the United States or its territories.
Applicants enrolled at four-year colleges or universities must be in their 1st
or 2nd year, or have at least two years remaining. Students enrolled at two-
year community and tribal colleges with intentions to transfer to a four-year
institution are also eligible to apply. Please contact our leadership team if

any major.
