Description:

THIS INTERNSHIP IS BASED AT KAIBAB NATIONAL FOREST SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE Williams, Arizona (about 35 miles west of Flagstaff, Arizona) :

The Kaibab National Forest (KNF) is seeking to fill one (1) intern position responsible for assisting the Public Affairs program with a wide variety of tasks associated with telling the story of the forest and its employees. The primary function of the Public Affairs program is to provide timely, accurate information about the forest’s programs, policies, activities to members of the public; local, county, state and federal officials; local, regional and national communities and stakeholders; and, internal audiences, including forest employees. The incumbent reports directly to the Kaibab National Forest Public Affairs Officer. Work will be focused on using the forest’s extensive outreach network and media platforms to innovatively and creatively inform and educate stakeholders about the work we do. Also, the incumbent will work closely with the Tribal Relations Program to support coordination and work with tribal partners. The Public Affairs program encompasses external and internal information; legislative affairs and congressional relations; communications planning; external and internal website management; media relations; social media management; community relations; crisis communications; media/image monitoring; public information support of wildland fire and other restoration efforts; development, publication and distribution of information products and services; and oversight of communication policies and procedures. While experience in these areas is not required for this position, the incumbent should have very strong written and verbal communications skills and a desire to work on a broad range of issues and topics with a variety of forest employees and partners.

Qualifications:

• Very strong communication skills (verbal and written) and good work ethic • Ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders and partners in a team environment • Basic knowledge of and interest in land management and natural/cultural resource issues • Experience in journalism, communications, public relations or related disciplines is helpful • Experience with social media platforms is helpful
