THIS INTERNSHIP IS BASED AT GRAND STAIRCASE-ESCALANTE NATIONAL MONUMENT, ESCALANTE, UT
Park Rangers Interns support the Bureau's recreation program. They work with the public to provide information, conduct permit compliance, and safety inspections. They respond to emergencies. They participate in evaluating visitor use patterns, preparing and maintaining recreation sites, and monitoring condition of sites and natural and cultural resources.
Duties for these positions focus on backcountry monitoring and compliance with the general public and commercial operators. Each week Park Rangers will conduct solo backcountry patrols in various locations on the Monument. This entails hiking, backpacking, camping, making public contact, issuing backcountry permits, educating the public on proper Leave No Trace practices, performing compliance monitoring for commercial operators (Special Recreation Permits), monitoring backcountry user impacts and conducting on site educational outreach to promote a positive public experience. In addition, interns will develop and create backcountry reports in the in-house database system-reporting finding from fieldwork.
Interns may conduct recreation site maintenance including but not limited to: cleaning toilets, campground maintenance, building fence, reclamation of user impacts, traffic control, pruning, weeding, and using weed trimmers on grounds and trails. Blowing and sweeping roadways and trails/paths. Digging and filling holes and trenches. Working with concrete. Fence and barrier repair and construction. Painting posts, signs, fences, structures etc.
Interns may be asked to develop educational displays and staff various educational events around the region. Programs may include orientation talks, interpretive programs, environmental education, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs. They may develop and maintain interpretive materials and educational displays, and staff information desks.
Housing is not provided for this internship and is difficult to secure in Escalante during the summer months. Consideration will be given to interns living within 3-4 hours of the work location. The majority of the work will be performed in the backcountry requiring camping for three to four days at a time. This position will work weekends on a four day, ten hour schedule. Interns will be required to work in an office setting for 6 hours per week to complete the required reports and preparation for the upcoming week. Travel time will be considered as hours worked during the workweek.
Qualifications:
Qualifications:
• Basic First Aid and CPR required; Wilderness First Responder or equivalent preferred
• Back country skills that include camping, backcountry cooking, map and compass navigational skills including GPS, proper backcountry hygiene practices, proper campsite selection and the ability and desire to work, travel and camp solo.
• Computer skills on PC, tablet, GIS, and GPS operating systems
• Driver’s License
• Ability to use hand held radio and personal location beacons

• Good communication and writing skills
• Ability to make sound decisions when consideration the safety of oneself and the visiting public.
