Description:

Assist the Director and Assistant Director of Student Involvement and Leadership with a wide array of tasks related to the operations and policies of the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership. Specifically focuses on the engagement of first year students, assessment, leadership trainings and activity programming on campus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in the development of an “emerging leaders” program aimed at developing first year student leaders.
  2. Coordinates programming in conjunction with University Housing associated with the Leadership Hall. Teaches a first year student leader course.
  3. Assist with coordinating assessment and evaluation efforts within the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.
  4. Works with SUUSA, SPB and Marketing and provides support and development through trainings, proper reporting, activities, and regular meetings.
  5. Educates STIL student leaders and SUUSA clubs about the resources available to them and ensure compliance to university and department policies and procedures to provide for efficient preparation and evaluation for student events and activities.
  6. Works with Director and Assistant Director in a support role with the leadership groups they advise.
  7. Educates students on T-Bird Connection.
  8. Assist with the ongoing development and enforcement of necessary and consistent operational standards for the utilization of the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
  9. Assists the SUU Student Association in their efforts to advocate for the students of Southern Utah University.
  10. Assists in the supervision of all major activities/special events to include Homecoming, Leadership conferences, Thunderbird Awards and themed weeks/programs.
  11. Develop links between student activities and academic life that help illuminate the lessons students learn in the classroom.
  12. Perform responsibilities for and serve on committees as assigned by the Director of Student Involvement and Leadership and the Vice President for Student Affairs.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Skills

  1. Current graduate student at Southern Utah University.
  2. Some knowledge of student development theory and its application in student activity planning required.
  3. Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with different campus constituencies.
  4. A commitment to all students and their total development, both curricular and co-curricular.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interact with and relate to a diverse student population.
  6. Strong oral and written skills.
  7. An appreciation for the unique culture of Southern Utah University.
  8. Demonstrated organizational, leadership, and public relations skills.
  9. Capable of organizing a wide range of diverse tasks efficiently and effectively.
  10. Capable of establishing and maintaining effective, cooperative working relationships with various campus and community constituents.

Experience

  1. Two years undergraduate or professional experience preferred.
  2. Experience in student programming, and/or student organization advising.
  3. Experience planning and implementing programs on a college campus preferred.
  4. Ability to work with students, faculty, staff and administrative personnel.
  5. Understanding of student needs and growth - including non-traditional students; enthusiasm for working with all students.
  6. Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality in records and communication.
  7. Experience working with diverse student populations preferred.
