Hours: During the academic year, Peer Mentors will work anywhere from 2-20 hours in the office per week. For SUU students, the part-time employment maximum is 20 hours per week. Generally very few Peer Mentors are needed during the summer and hours vary depending on events. Some night and weekend hours may be expected.

Dates: Most Peer Mentors are hired during the school year to work during fall and spring semesters. 1-2 Peer Mentors may be hired for summer for limited hours.

Number of positions available: 5-10 Peer Mentors per semester, depending on need and budgetary constraints.

Training: Peer Mentors must attend a mandatory training before fall semester begins. This training normally lasts an afternoon or evening. The content covered is essential to student success in the role of Peer Mentor.

Job Description:
As a Peer Mentor you are expected to serve as a role model to new and continuing students in Rural Health Scholars. Peer Mentors are leaders academically and socially. Peer Mentors must be comfortable in the following areas:

  • Answering phone inquiries regarding Rural Health Scholars, Southern Utah University, and general healthcare information
  • Responding to emails sent to the rhs@suu.edu or ruralhealth@suu.edu addresses
  • Greeting walk-in traffic to the RHS office and directing individuals to appropriate resources
  • Communicating with various individuals including new RHS students, prospective students and family members, academic advisors, academic faculty and RHS staff members.
  • Managing and understanding Marketplace, an online payment system
  • Updating and maintaining the SUU RHS website
  • Updating student resources and marketing materials
  • Serving as a mentor to current RHS students in class selection and preparation for graduate school
  • Speaking well and representing positively at all times the RHS program and SUU overall
  • Sitting on student panels
  • Facilitating seminar discussions
  • Planning RHS and healthcare-related events
  • Leading RHS activities
  • Editing and tracking items on Canvas, SUU’s online learning platform
  • Understanding SUU policies and procedures as related to budget, accounts receivable, and payroll
  • Working autonomously in an office environment
  • Managing social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snap Chat
  • Filing student data (electronically and physically)
  • Understanding privacy regulations and student rights
  • Driving SUU motor pool vehicles
  • Assisting with the Utah Osteopathic Medical Association, National Rural Health Association, and the Rural Health Association of Utah as needed

The Peer Mentors will need to assume leadership responsibilities beyond those required of new and current RHS students. Peer Mentors will assist in educating new students about the value and importance of RHS, the necessity of high quality service, and the expectations of our program and staff. Peer Mentors will act as a role model for all other RHS students by encouraging personal skill development and setting high academic standards.

Qualifications:

Qualifications: Peer Mentors must be current members of Rural Health Scholars, have already applied to graduate schools, and be in the process of interviewing/acceptance into graduate programs. In addition, Peer Mentors must be either enrolled as an SUU student or a recent graduate of SUU. Peer Mentors must be highly competitive applicants to graduate programs based on assessment and information from RHS staff members.

Peer Mentors must be able to multitask and complete items without being asked to do so. Strong organizational and time management skills are a must. They must also be available for Peer Mentor training. Peer Mentors are hired at-will, indicating employment can be terminated at any time by an RHS staff member.
