Description:

Southern Utah University’s Semester in the Parks (SIP) program offers undergraduate students an opportunity to take a semester of general education and upper division classes in Bryce Canyon National Park while living and working at Ruby's Inn resort. Students also participate in a one week excursion plus several weekend field labs visiting other national parks and public lands as part of this academic program. Additional program information can be found at https://www.suu.edu/parks/semester/ Semester in the Parks is seeking a dynamic individual interested in serving as an onsite Program Assistant to provide support for students and faculty participating in the program as well as staff at Ruby's Inn, Bryce Canyon National Park and other program partners. General Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Serve in a professional support role to facilitate and enhance the mission and goals of the Semester in the Parks program.
  2. Live on site during the Fall 2018 semester, at the SUU Mountain Center and Ruby’s Inn Resort.
  3. Offer support to SIP students to ensure positive group dynamics, including, but not limited to: a. Assist in implementing logistics (housing, meals, scheduling, etc.) Act as on-site problem solver and student mentor. b. Serve as community liaison i. Meet at least weekly with students to promote a healthy student community. ii. Be a mentor/resource for students iii. Weekly reporting to Academic and Logistics Coordinators. iv. Weekly check in with staff at Ruby’s Inn and Bryce Canyon National Park c. Be on-call for emergency contact and emergency logistical needs
  4. Support SIP faculty, including, but not limited to: a. Coordinate classroom needs for faculty b. Provide student feedback to faculty c. Assist with special field trip needs (equipment, transportation, meals, public lands coordination, etc
  5. Assist organizing SIP special events and activities
  6. Attend trainings and SIP faculty meetings during the spring semester
  7. Additional duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in any field, currently working on Master’s degree.
  2. Ability to communicate and establish positive relationships with SIP students, faculty, staff, and program partners.
  3. Possess outdoor leadership skills.
  4. Possess or ability to obtain Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification, Wilderness First Aid, or other First Aid training prior to Fall semester 2018.
  5. Ability to be a self-starter, initiate and complete work.
  6. Possess excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task, as well as written and oral communication, problem solving and conflict management skills. Proven record of ability to work in small groups.
  7. Willingness to work some evenings and/or weekends. Desired Qualifications
  8. Working Knowledge of public lands, outdoor education, and experiential learning.
  9. Background as a group leader/mentor.
