Overview:

The focus of (2) internships will be assisting Outdoor Recreation Planner with a full range of recreation management activities including maintaining, constructing, monitoring, assessing, and documenting recreation facilities and visitor use data. Interns will gain experience in the following areas: Use of Trafx Counters-(visitor use data), trail maintenance and construction, recreation facility maintenance, Special Recreation Permit processing, GIS and GPS data collection and data management. Interns will be exposed to a variety of weather conditions (temperatures 45 - 105+ degrees). Kanab and Escalante are small communities with limited services available. No housing will be provided.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Collect Trafx Counter-(use data)
  • Recreation facility maintenance, development, and construction
  • Route maintenance and recreation site construction
  • Assist with administering campground and visitor use fee areas
  • Assist with hiking patrols of routes. Monitoring and documenting of visitor use, documenting and reporting of resource /facility damage, water collection and testing
  • Provide visitor assistance and/or contact visitors in the field, providing information on the area and recreation opportunities
  • Assist in the maintenance and installation of signs, gates, fences, and other facilities as assigned using power and hand tools
  • Use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Training provided.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in remote locations under a wide variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical exertion including, but not limited to, hiking, lifting, carrying, bending, digging, biking, walking and standing.
  • Good oral communication skills and tact for face-to-face contacts with the public
  • Experience working outdoors
  • Ability to navigate across landscapes with the use of map and GPS
  • Able to operate 4-wheel drive vehicle comfortably in rough terrain
  • Background check required upon selection.
  • Applicants who possess these skills and who are pursuing a degree in fields related to Outdoor Recreation Management or Tourism will be given greatest consideration.
