Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 7:00 am - 5:30 pm, 10 hour days with a 30-minute lunch break

Overview:

The renewable resources division of the BLM Kanab Field Office is responsible for the administration of the range, wildlife, fisheries, soil, water, air, forestry, and sensitive plants. The diversity of resources and issues surrounding them provide many opportunities for interdisciplinary and inter-agency projects. Recent projects stretch across many disciplines, including development of grazing management systems, fuels treatments, Range Improvement Projects, and Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation and invasive species control. Nine (3) internships available. This internship may require overnight camping or travel. Must provide own living quarters. Duty stations are in rural communities with limited services available.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Focus will be directed primarily towards a collection of vegetative monitoring data. Extensive experience will be gained in the following vegetative monitoring methods
  • Vegetative Monitoring Methods
  • Line, Point, Gap, Intercept
  • Nested Frequency
  • Key Forage Plant Utilization
  • Proper Functioning Condition (PFC)
  • Multiple Indicator Monitoring (MIM)
  • Work Load: Field Work – 90% , Office Work – 10%

Qualifications:

  • Some experience in one or all of the following is helpful but not necessary to apply for the internship positions: natural resource management, biology, physical science, or botany. Experience with herbicide (weed) treatments is a plus.
  • Must have valid driver’s license
  • Background check required upon selection
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in an outdoor setting
  • Plant Identification/vegetative monitoring skills
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (Training provided)Comfortable driving a 4X4 vehicle on dirt and clay roads
