Overview:
The renewable resources division of the BLM Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) is responsible for the administration of the range, wildlife, fisheries, soil, water, air, forestry, and sensitive plants. The diversity of resources and issues surrounding them provide many opportunities for interdisciplinary and inter-agency projects Recent projects stretch across many disciplines, including development of grazing management systems, fuels treatments, Wildlife Improvement Projects, Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation and invasive species control. Two (2) internships available. Intern will utilize and increase skills in wildlife management, including capturing and handling wildlife, inventorying and monitoring rangeland, natural resources, collection of seeds, and natural resource data collection and management. This internship may require some weekend work, overnight camping, or travel. Must provide own living quarters. Duty stations are in rural communities with limited services available.
Position Responsibilities:
- Participate as an interdisciplinary team member in the overall fieldwork and monitoring program for the wildlife, riparian, threatened and endangered species
- Conduct wildlife baseline inventories to document wildlife and wildlife habitat presence, diversity, relative abundance and distribution
- Assessment of seasonal migratory bird use of habitat improvements for long term effects monitoring (i.e. bird point counts, raptor nest monitoring
- Determinations of existing wildlife diversity, densities, and habitat utilization
- Assessments of impacts upon wildlife and wildlife habitat as a result of a treatment
- Assessments of the need to further mitigate impacts of a treatment for any species or class of wildlife on or near the project area
- Evaluations of the effectiveness of mitigation as it pertains to wildlife
- Comparisons of habitat quality in potentially affected habitats before and after treatment activities
Qualifications:
- Some experience in one or all of the following is helpful but not necessary to apply for the internship positions: zoology, natural resource management, biology, physical science, or botany. Must have valid driver’s license. Background check required upon selection
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience working in an outdoor setting
- Wildlife Identification/monitoring skills
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
- Use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (Training provided)
- Comfortable driving 4X4 vehicle on dirt and clay roads
