Schedule: 40 hours/week internship. Weekends and evenings occasionally required for field work. 14-week internship.

Overview:

Intern will work in several different capacities in resource management. Wildlife Program duties will include monitoring California Condors and Peregrine Falcon nests, conducting mule deer surveys, assisting with Mexican spotted owl surveys, and interacting with park visitors to provide information about the park's wildlife (approximately 2 days week). Other duties will include digitizing and organizing research permits in the Compliance Office. Intern will also work with exotic plant management team in both front-country and back-country locations.

No housing is available for this position.

Position Responsibilities:

Wildlife Responsibilities: Monitoring California Condors and Peregrine Falcon nests. Assisting with Mexican Spotted Owl surveys, both during the day and at night. Will be taught to use telemetry equipment. Educating park visitors about wildlife issues. Exotic Plant Management Responsibilities: As part of a close team, intern will help GPS map and eradicate (chemically via herbicide or by hand pulling) exotic species throughout Zion National Park. Overnight back-country trips may be required. Compliance Office Responsibilities: Help Zion's Compliance Officer manage park databases and organize research permits.

Qualifications:

  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to complete strenuous outdoor work including hiking. Available at night for owl surveys or back-country overnights.
  • Attention to detail. Ability to keep good fields notes and organize data in an office setting.
