Description:

The Intern for the office of Student Connection and Completion will work closely with the Coordinator of Student Connection and Completion in support of retention and completion initiatives and programs. The Intern will primarily assist with students who are transitioning in and out of the academic term. Some of the Intern’s duties will include:

  1. Meet with/contact students who intend to withdraw from SUU’s summer term to determine what might be done to help retain this student and/or ways we can improve our services at SUU to prevent similar students from withdrawing.
  2. Meet with/contact students who intend to return to SUU to determine what might be done to create a smooth transition back into the university.
  3. Track and compile data from every student who withdraws from SUU over the summer, work with the Coordinator of Student Connection and Completion to analyze and interpret the data.
  4. Develop programming and initiatives based on data findings to support current and future students and prevent fewer students from withdrawing.
  5. Assist students who are not finding success in their summer courses through our ‘Link Alert’ system.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

This position is only available to undergraduate students who are enrolled at Southern Utah University (SUU) for a minimum of 3 credits in face-to-face over the summer. Online courses and internship credits will not count.

  1. Proven self-motivation and organizational abilities to plan and independently execute projects/tasks within specific deadlines, and while exercising good judgment successfully assess, balance, and prioritize numerous competing concerns.
  2. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, parents, and families.
  3. Outstanding written, verbal and interpersonal skills - excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills to include proven effectiveness in speaking on a one-on-one basis and making oral presentations before groups.
  4. Ability to diffuse frustrated students and remain calm in tense conversations.
  5. Experience leading and motivating campus partners outside of the organization to create successful partnerships, programs, and initiatives.
  6. Possess a commitment to all students and their total development, both curricular and co-curricular.
  7. Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality in records and communication. Enthusiasm for working with all students.
