Description:

SUU PREP is an academically intense, mathematics-based, summer enrichment program, designed to develop abstract reasoning and problem-solving skills. PREP identifies middle school students with the potential to become scientists or engineers and reinforces them in pursuit of these fields. The program is presented over the course of three summers. SUU PREP expects to serve 90 students for SUU PREP 2020. It will operate from June 1st to July 16th. The program will include coursework, team projects, class presentations, field trips, special events, and examinations.

Program Assistants are scheduled to begin work on May 26th, 2020 for staff orientation, training, and program preparation, and end July 23rd, 2020. SUU PREP PA’s work roughly 7 hours per day at SUU PREP, and 35-40 hours per week.

We will be hiring 6 PA's.

Proposed Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and mentor a group of approximately 30 students with the following specific duties:
  • Ensure the safety and appropriate behavior of program participants.
  • Attend classes and laboratories with students, be engaged in learning class material and actively help students during class time. (Cell phone use is not permitted while interacting with students.)
  • Supervise lunch, providing educational support activities and tutoring.
  • Serve as a “mentor” to students, encouraging the development of a commitment to educational achievement.
  • Present lessons during Study Hour as needed.
  • Engage with students during lunch/activity.
  • Attend and contribute to any parent/student/teacher meetings.
  • Supervise drop off & pick up of students.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Assist with planning, implementation, setting up and taking down of events.
  • Work as a team along with other PA's, PA Leads, and PA Manager.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Qualifications:

Proposed Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
  • Commitment to and interest in assisting middle and high school students in their academic and personal growth.
  • Completion of at least one year of college.
  • Currently enrolled in college with a 2.5 or better GPA.
  • Prior experience working with adolescents (preferred).
  • Available to work from 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM daily between May 26th and July 23, 2020.
  • Preference is given to college science, mathematics, computer science, or engineering majors; previous PREP participants; STEM education majors; and former PREP employees.
  • Ability to use initiative, demonstrate dependability, and use time constructively.
  • Ability to meet and interact with parents cordially and proficiently.
  • Ability to work with attention to detail, maturity, professional demeanor, tact, diplomacy, and a sense of humor.

Skills:

  • Lead classroom discussions/activities
  • Utilize effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records
  • Ability to assess student work
  • Capable of maintaining control of student groups
  • Supervise middle school students (ages 12-15)
