Description:

Foundations of Outdoor Recreation (ORPT 3000) is looking for a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Spring 2021 semester. The class is an experiential education based course where students learn professional foundations of outdoor recreation, including land management agencies, the history of outdoor recreation, outdoor stewardship and ethics, skills, career opportunities, trends and issues. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the Ten Essentials and Expedition Behavior throughout the semester.

Duties will include (but are not limited to) assisting the class instructor with class logistics every week, which may include taking attendance, compiling class contact list, assisting in teaching basic skills such as Expedition Behavior, the Ten Essentials, layering, challenge course activities, and other concepts as needed. In addition to attending class every week, you will be expected to have knowledge of the course material and outdoor related news and issues, develop an open relationship with the class to be available for questions or concerns, and be a self-starter.

Qualifications:

  • Have completed ORPT 3000 and 3005 with a B average or higher
  • Be able to demonstrate leadership and teaching skills
  • Be available Thursdays from 12-6 pm (the class is from 1-4:50 pm) with an understanding that several classes may extend beyond that time
  • Have time each week to coordinate with the instructor
  • Have a working cell phone and check emails & phone messages daily, preferably several times throughout the day during week days
  • Be on the SUU Fleet Operations Driver List or be willing to complete the online driver training (in order to drive most vehicles other than 15 passenger vans)
  • Preference given to anyone age 21 older to be able to drive 15 passenger vans for class trips (not required)
  • Current first aid/CPR or Wilderness First Aid/First Responder is preferred
  • Demonstrate an understanding and passion for teaching and learning in the outdoors
