Description:

The Child Care Assistant/Substitute works under the direction of the SUU Center for Hope Manager and Lead Teachers to assist with children ages 0-11 years old. Student Workers must be currently enrolled as a student at SUU, preferably in the Early Childhood Development, Family Services, or an education or social services program. Child Care Assistant/Substitute will work in the classroom to supervise or assist individual children or group of children as required, and in normal child care routines and activities. The Student Worker may also be asked to help with any administrative or customer service duties such as checking in/out parents, or other duties as required such as food preparation, cleaning and sanitizing, etc.

Positions may have regular hours, or be substitute/on call positions.

Classrooms are divided by age groups (0-12 months, 12-18 months, 18 months-3 years, 3-5 year, etc). Depending on the age of the child duties may include infant care (including, feeding, diapering, naptime, etc), supervising children, monitoring safety and health of children, setting up, maintaining, and cleaning up play spaces, supporting conflict resolution between children, providing positive guidance, preparing and serving meals and snacks, cleaning and organizing, circle time, singing, games, reading stories, and any other classroom tasks as assigned by the Lead Teacher or Child Care Manager. Child Care Assistant/Substitutes should model respectful behavior, appropriate hygiene and manners, and social skills. Child Care Assistant/Substitutes must also commit to ongoing training and professional development.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled at Southern Utah University.
  • Complete required preservice training after hire.
  • Must be supportive of the SUU Center for Hope vision, policies and procedures.
  • Must be willing to abide by the SUU Center for Hope Code of Conduct.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work respectfully with low-income children and families, those with special needs, and families with diverse ethnic backgrounds.
  • Must be able to pass a Child Care Licensing Background Check and must not have a substantiated case of child abuse on record.
  • Must be willing and able to implement the SUU approach to individualizing curriculum development.
  • Must be able to work in a team with agency representatives, parents, coordinators, family advocates, teachers and other professionals to meet the needs of the children and families served.
  • Experience with young children in child care, preschool, and/or other settings is preferred but not required.
  • Must have availability to work blocks of 3-5 hours at a time preferably M-F.
  • Preference may be given to individuals who have experience with infants and toddlers (preferably in groups), can work mornings hours or have a flexible schedule, and will be available to work through the summer and/or Fall Semester.
