Description:

The Graduate Writing Consultant works with graduate students to provide them with constructive writing feedback to enhance their skills, knowledge, and overall confidence with writing, research, and academic or professional genres through tutoring sessions, workshops, or other Graduate Writing Center resources and services. The Graduate Writing Center is currently fully online, and the Graduate Writing Consultant may work remotely if desired. However, to be eligible for this position, applicants must be living in the state of Utah at the time of hire and for the duration of their employment and must have a reliable internet connection.

Qualifications:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct one-on-one and small-group online tutoring sessions with graduate students from various disciplines.
  2. Provide constructive feedback on graduate-level academic writing as well as professional writing projects in a variety of genres.
  3. Complete and maintain session records accurately, professionally, and promptly.
  4. Assist graduate students with scheduling appointments and respond to inquiries about appointments and services.
  5. Attend and participate in required trainings and meetings.
  6. Communicate and consult regularly with your supervisor, the Assistant Director of the SUU Writing Centers.
  7. Assist the Assistant Director of the SUU Writing Centers with special projects such as marketing and outreach, writing workshops and webinars, and/or program development as needed.

Required Qualifications:

A. Education and Experience

  1. Earned a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university, AND
  2. Currently working on a Master's degree from an accredited university, or Earned a Master's degree from an accredited university (current graduate students preferred)
  3. Experienced in providing constructive feedback on academic writing
  4. Experienced in working with adult learners as a writing tutor, writing fellow, teaching assistant, or college instructor (preferably of composition or writing-intensive courses)

B. Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

  1. Strong writing and communication skills
  2. Understanding of graduate-level academic writing genres and expectations
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in APA format and style (APA 7th edition preferred)
  4. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and dependability
  5. Ability to engage with adult learners in synchronous and asynchronous online formats
  6. Ability to access a reliable internet connection and audio/visual equipment for online sessions
  7. Proficiency with essential Google Suite applications

Preferred Qualifications

A. Education and Experience

  1. Trained in writing center and general tutoring theory, pedagogy, and best practices
  2. Experienced in planning and facilitating successful writing workshops for adult learners

B. Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

  1. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends (as needed)
  2. Proficiency with Zoom and Google video/interactive meeting platforms
