Description:

The Public Lands Field Assistant will work with faculty in the Department of Biology to participate in DNA Studies of Mojave Desert Tortoise in Fire-damaged and Unburned Habitats throughout southern Utah during the 2021-22 season. Job duties consist of collecting and analyzing field data, using GIS to identify field sites and upload data, lab work and possible fieldwork which could entail driving long distances on dirt roads Training will be provided.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have a background in biology, and deep interest in genetics, microbiology, conservation biology, public lands management, natural resources, and/or the intersection between technology and biology.

Ideal candidates will be able to meet weekly with biology faculty mentors that include Drs. Jackie Grant and Karl Jarvis, but should also be able to carry out work independently. Candidates must be responsible, independent, and punctual. Must be comfortable interacting with professionals at the Bureau of Land Management and the Dixie National Forest as well as members of the general public. Biology majors and minors preferred, but other majors will be considered.
