Overview

Start your ranger career at Gold Spike National Historic Park. Work with a dedicated staff interpreting the parks natural and historic features, answering questions, give guided tours. Opportunities for cross training and learning about National Park Service Careers.

Responsibilities

Duties consist primarily of:

  • Giving talks
  • Interpreting natural and historic features
  • Answering questions
  • Guiding tours
  • Providing services to visitors at the park visitor center and other locations throughout the park
  • Working with park interpreters developing and presenting a variety of programs about the history of the transcontinental railroad, railroad workers, and steam locomotives
  • Interns may also develop and present formal and informal interpretive talks, hikes of easy difficulty, and assist with special events during the summer season
  • Visitor Center Information Desk duties will be answering questions, providing directions, recommending activities, interacting with Junior Rangers, occasionally operating park bookstore POS system, processing lost and found items, operating a 2-way radio, telephone and other duties as necessary
  • Performing opening and closing procedures for an information center according to established procedures
  • Educating visitors about rules, regulations, and safety concerns to gain compliance
  • Provide direction, information, and orientation about services or activities of interest to the public

There may also be opportunities for cross training such as working in resource management, maintenance, or administration depending on the interests of the intern.

Qualifications:

This position is best suited for a highly motivated, hard-working, personable (people oriented) individual interested in pursuing a career in public lands management or recreation management. To clarify, interpretation is explaining the park to the public visitors. It does not require proficiency in a foreign language. Successful candidates must pass a background investigation. Housing is available for rent at Golden Spike National Historical Park.
