Description:

The Center for Diversity & Inclusion sponsors identity-based (Includes LGBTQIA+) peer mentoring programs for first-year students. Incoming students will be contacted during the summer, spring, and based on demographic information shared during the admission process. They will receive information about how to be matched with a Beacon. If you are looking to have a meaningful impact, share your culture with others, and gain invaluable leadership experience, please read the following responsibilities:

  • Serve as the face of the CDI at key functions including Multicultural Student Orientation, Thunder U, Red Riots, Open Houses, and promote the center's message of inclusivity.
  • Provide leadership through peer mentoring and advocate for the academic success and growth of our underrepresented populations.
  • Work with a team to develop content for workshops relevant to students of diverse backgrounds (host speakers, plan activities, reserve facilities, organize food, etc.).
  • Co-plan and facilitate CDI programming related to student retention.
  • Actively engage in outreach campaigns to connect with students, raise awareness about SUU’s diverse student population, and educate the larger campus on the CDI’s services.
  • Assist CDI staff with additional events and projects, as necessary.

CDI Beacon Program Goals:

  • Provide support and introduce new students to resources and services to help them adjust academically and socially to SUU.
  • Guide students through their acclimation to SUU and their personal identity and cultural journey.
  • Educate and refer students to campus & community resources.
  • Provide personal and professional enrichment opportunities for students.
  • Build a sense of community, connection, and belonging.
  • Attend and actively participate in spring training activities.
  • Report to work one week prior to the start of each trimester (Some meetings will be held on Zoom).
  • Attend monthly in-service (mentor development) sessions coordinated by the Center for Diversity & Inclusion (subject to change).
  • Meet one-on-one with assigned Beacee(s) to discuss academic and social adjustment at the university, concerns, and successes as well as provide updates and beneficial information.

Qualifications:

  • Rising 2nd, 3rd, 4th year.
  • Good academic and judicial standing with the University.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to empathize and provide academic and personal support to incoming students.
  • Desire and interest in helping new students adjust and feel welcomed to the University.
  • Commitment to investing the time necessary to be effective.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Ability manage multiple priorities.
  • Curiosity, self-directed, and ability to take initiative.
