Description:
Reporter for SUUNews.net and the University Journal. Candidate must attend weekly staff meetings where reporters should be able to pitch story ideas and receive assignments from section editors. This will include contacting, interviewing and researching sources including maintaining notes and audio recordings. The candidate should understand what makes a story newsworthy, be able to apply news values and understand the fundamentals of news writing and reporting with the reader's perspective in mind. Reporters are responsible for writing articles in short and long form (inverted pyramid, feature/profiles) following the Associated Press style. Other responsibilities include abiding by journalism ethics and being able to cooperate with other reporters, editors and the faculty operations manager. Reporters must be able to attend events and then work quickly by to submit and revise stories based on deadlines set by editors.
Qualifications:
- Reporters should have strong writing skills with an understanding of the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation, spelling and writing mechanics.
- Qualified candidates should have earned at least a B in COMM 1130 - Writing for Communication or equivalent courses where they have demonstrated the ability to write news stories and meet deadlines.
- Ideal candidates are outgoing and able to conduct interviews with a wide range of people.
