Description:

Under the direction of the Coordinator of Learning + Engagement (L+E), the K-12 Learning + Engagement Assistant will provide the L+E team general support in the planning and implementation of programs and events.

Duties and Responsibilities K-12 Tours (academic year)

  • Develop lesson plans
  • Create a detailed tour script pertaining to current exhibitions; include language and content adjustments for secondary school audiences
  • Identify relevant books or integrated lesson topics. Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Curatorial Affairs on appropriate topics per each exhibition.
  • Create lesson content that adheres to the K-12 Utah Core Curriculum Standards. Include grade appropriate vocabulary, references to exhibits, instructions, and examples of hands-on activities
  • Assemble materials and instructions for L+E Tour Guides
  • Assist in training Tour Guides
  • Develop hands-on activity
  • Create detailed instructions and examples of hands-on activities related to the tour content, to be completed in the SUMA Classroom in a 30-minute time frame
  • Create materials list and communicate any purchasing needs to the Coordinator of L+E
  • Oversee post-tour survey by tour attendees, specifically teachers and aides
  • Meet with Coordinator of L+E to review feedback following each exhibit, sooner if necessary
  • Oversee tour registration, operating the pertinent email address and requests.
  • As needed, lead school tours with support from L+E team members and the Coordinator of L+E

Create Playdate (summer)

  • Develop hands-on activities for children twice a month
  • Identify a relevant children’s book for each activity
  • Create instructions, examples, and a day-of plan for in-person activity
  • Manage setup, take down, and lead the story time and associated activity
  • Take attendance/get contact information and provide media release at each activity

Spring Break Out Kits (spring)

  • Assist in creating materials list and communicating all purchasing needs to the Coordinator of L+E
  • Assist with art kit assembly and communicate additional staffing needs for assembly to Coordinator of L+E

Teen Art Camp (summer)

  • Assist in finding available art instructor(s) to lead a five-day art camp for 13-18 year olds during the ICSD summer break
  • Support the contracted teaching artist to plan all lessons and activities
  • Assist with daily set-up and take-down and assist the teaching artist during the camp

Sidekicks

  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of monthly Sidekicks Assemble events
  • Assist in creating instructions, examples, and a day-of plan for each activity
  • Assist in creating materials lists and communicate any purchasing needs to the Coordinator of L+E
  • Communicate any additional staffing needs to the Coordinator of L+E
  • Assist with setup, take down, and lead event day-of (+2 hours)
  • Assist in the coordination of Sidekicks Study Days once a semester
  • Assist in creating an event plan
  • Communicate any purchasing or additional staffing needs to the Coordinator of L+E

Partnered Events (as needed)

  • In coordination with Programs and Engagement Assistant: develop a pertinent hands-on activity for partnered events as they unfold. (past examples: OSU Children's Jubilee, Pumpkin Festival, and SUU’s 125th Anniversary)
  • Assist with creating instructions, examples, and day-of plan.
  • Assist with creating materials list and communicating purchasing needs
  • Assist with setup, management, and take down of activity
  • Support other team members and initiatives as needed

Working Contingencies

(This section examines each job in terms of physical demands and environmental factors.)

  • Obtaining travel authorization through motor pool
  • Carrying current driver’s license and able to drive own vehicle or SUU motor pool vehicle to/from programs
  • Working entire duration of the event, with the expectation of cleaning-up and restoring of supplies within 24 hours
  • Occasional lifting of heavy objects (with other team members)
  • May be standing for long periods of time while working events

Qualifications:

Welcoming demeanor, dependable, punctual, excellent communication skills, enthusiastic, general knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and Google Drive. Must be comfortable receiving feedback and asking questions.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience leading tours, ability to instruct K-12 students, assist with creative-making activities, and can communicate effectively.
