SUU PREP/Youth Engineering Academy Teacher Description

The SUU PREP/Youth Engineering Academy (YEA) is a K12 outreach program organized within the SUU College of Engineering and Computational Sciences. YEA exposes kids from kindergarten to 12th grade to topics in engineering and computational sciences in a fun and engaging way. YEA breaks down gender, racial, and income barriers to let all students know they can pursue careers in engineering fields if they desire.

Youth Engineering Academy Teachers teach a pre-prepared programming curriculum to a class of 12 to 20 students on the SUU campus. Camps run daily from Monday - Friday for the following weeks: June 3-7, 2024 June 10-14, 2024 June 17-21, 2024 July 8-12, 2024 July 15-19, 2024 July 22-26, 2024

The individual selected for this position will serve as an AmeriCorps member. AmeriCorps is a national service opportunity, not just a regular job. This is a wonderful opportunity to add service and hands-on teaching experience to your resume! AmeriCorps members sign an agreement to complete a term of service. You will be expected to complete a minimum of 300 service hours throughout your term.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in a one-day training approximately one week before the camp to learn Risk Management policies and YEA curriculum.
  • Supervise the support staff and volunteers in the classroom in a manner that is team-based, inclusive, and respectful.
  • Ensure the safety of children through constant supervision and effective arrangement of space.
  • Maintain a tidy, pleasant, inviting atmosphere in which children feel comfortable and secure, and parents feel welcome and reassured.
  • Provide a positive atmosphere for all students.
  • Create and coordinate safe and enjoyable activities for all campers, and actively participate in all aspects of the campers’ day.

Teach two half-day classes each week. Classes include:

  • Scratch Jr and Junior Robotics (K-2nd grade)
  • Web Development and Python (3rd-5th grade)
  • Laser Cutting and 3D Printing (6th-8th and 9th-12th grade)
  • Cryptography (6th-8th and 9th-12th grade)
  • Algebra
  • Statistics
  • Physics
  • Logic
  • Problem Solving
  • Engineering

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

Knowledge and Experience in class subject area is required

Certified K12 educators with coding experience are preferred.

SUU education majors with coding experience will also be considered.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, be a United States citizen or permanent resident, and meet the requirements set by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Individuals selected for these positions must pass a background check.
