Description:
This is a great position for those who want a flexible and physically active job that makes a difference! Working under SUU's Outdoor Pathways Program Coordinator, this position will spearhead efforts in collecting recyclable materials and compostables from SUU’s campus, along with other sustainability activities. This is an on-campus job, and requires applicants who are personally invested in recycling, composting, and other sustainability practices. Applicants must be willing to take a lead, be consistent in their weekly work hours, be able to work independently and communicate well. This position will work under the Outdoor Pathways program coordinator in collaboration with one fellow part-time sustainability student employee, Chartwells executive chef, the SUU Greenhouse director, and the SUU Community Garden Club.
Responsibilities:
- Lead SUU’s recycling efforts by monitoring the SUU’s Recycling schedule, updating it as needed, and communicating with campus collaborators as changes or issues arise.
- Work alongside the Outdoor Pathways Coordinator to train and direct a fellow part-time sustainability employee in:
- Picking up university recyclable materials from over 100 different campus locations on a weekly basis. Picking up compostable materials from the Chartwells kitchen every evening, around 3-5, M-F. (70% of job)
- Take the lead in Rototilling, turning and rotating compost piles at SUU’s community garden on a weekly basis. (20% of job)
- Coordinate with your fellow sustainability employee, SUU Community Garden Club and Chartwells kitchen staff (10% of job) in:
- Scheduling the recycling and composting pick-up route.
- Keeping recycling and composting bins clean and organized.
- Assisting with SUU’s community garden (as time allows after recycling and composting duties have been accomplished.)
- Assist with increasing efficiency and awareness of sustainability initiatives on campus and in the surrounding community.
Qualifications:
- Have a personal interest in recycling, gardening, and other sustainability practices.
- Must be a SUU student.
- Able to lift 20-75 lbs regularly
- Honest, dependable and able to work independently.
- Have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and a familiarity with campus & community layout.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Majoring or Minoring in Sustainability, Environmental Studies, Agriculture or another related field.
