Overview:
Cedar Breaks National Monument is seeking interns to assist with winter visitor services and interpretive operations. Interns will primarily staff the park’s winter contact station at North View Overlook and lead guided snowshoe hikes for the public. During these hikes, interns will deliver formal presentations about the Monument's resources and present to diverse audiences.
This internship provides hands-on experience in public communication, environmental education, and interpretive program development within the National Park Service. Interns will gain practical skills in audience engagement, program design, and winter field operations at high elevation.
Responsibilities:
- Interns will staff the winter contact station at North View Overlook, providing information about Cedar Breaks and surrounding areas to visitors in person, and occasionally by phone and email.
- Assist in managing reservations for guided snowshoe tours, maintain and organize snowshoe equipment, and keep the contact station clean and orderly.
- Research, design, and present interpretive programs during guided snowshoe hikes for public and educational audiences.
- Additional duties may include assisting with visitor safety, orientation, and other operational needs as assigned by park staff.
Qualifications:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills,
- An interest in working with the public, and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Coursework or experience in interpretation, education, natural sciences, recreation, or related fields is helpful but not required.
- Comfortable speaking to groups, conducting research, and learning to develop interpretive presentations.
The position takes place at high elevation in winter conditions, so applicants must be prepared to work outdoors in cold, snowy weather and perform moderate physical activity such as snowshoeing.
