IIC Crew Leader Intern - Bryce Canyon and Escalante Locations (Student Position)

Description:

TWO AVAILABLE POSITIONS. ONE BASED AT BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK AND ONE BASED IN ESCALANTE, UT

As a crew leader, you will be leading a crew of high school and college students on re-vegetation/restoration, trail work, recreation facilities, and fence projects at Cedar Breaks National Monument, Kolob, Pipe Springs, Great Basin and Zion National Parks. Depending on project availability, the crews may also work on the Grand Canyon-Parashant, the Dixie National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management (Cedar District and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument), and regional Utah State Parks. Conservation crew work will be carried out in rugged outdoor environments exposed to the elements and is physically intensive.

Start Date: May 9, 2016. Summer Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 10 hours/day

Qualifications:

Crew Leader Requirements

  1. Prior to leading crews, crew leaders will be required to complete in good standing a two-week training period in the field, working alongside fellow crew leaders and land managers.
  2. Crew leaders must be at least 21 years old.
  3. Crew leaders need solid outdoor leadership skills, teaching skills, a vigorous work ethic, outdoor/natural resource experience, a positive attitude, maturity, and flexibility.
  4. Crew leaders will need to pass a Utah driver’s course and a background check.
  5. Preference will be given to candidates with Wilderness First Aid certification (or greater), Leave No Trace training, chainsaw certification, and prior conservation or land management crew experience.

Position Responsibilities

  1. Crew leaders will coordinate crew work with the IIC Crew Manager and Crew Liaison.
  2. Be responsible for the safety and well-being of their crew.
  3. Facilitate project work, motivating crew members to complete work that can be physically challenging, at times monotonous, but potentially satisfying and fun.
  4. Complete daily photo documentation of crew while conducting project work.
  5. Maintain a daily professional journal of work completed.
