Description:

The Vegetation Technician assists resource specialists and land managers in monitoring, managing, and restoring plant communities on public lands. This position supports field data collection, invasive species control, and native plant restoration efforts. The work contributes directly to land health assessments, ecosystem restoration, and habitat improvement projects across rangeland, forest, and riparian environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field surveys to collect data on vegetation cover, species composition, and site condition.
  • Identify and record native and invasive plant species using established monitoring protocols.
  • Assist with vegetation mapping and data entry using GPS and GIS tools.
  • Support habitat restoration projects, including reseeding, planting, and weed treatment.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment, vehicles, and tools safely and effectively.
  • Record, organize, and verify field data for analysis and reporting.
  • Collaborate with botanists, range specialists, and ecologists on interdisciplinary projects.
  • Follow safety procedures and environmental stewardship practices in all field

Qualifications:

  • Must be age 18+
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest or coursework in botany, ecology, range management, or environmental science.
  • Ability to identify common native and invasive plant species, or willingness to learn.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather, terrain, and remote settings.
  • Basic skills in GPS navigation, data collection, and computer applications (Excel, GIS preferred).
  • Detail-oriented and able to follow field protocols accurately.
  • Good teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Physical ability to hike, bend, and carry field equipment for extended periods.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree in plant science, ecology, or natural resources preferred.
  • Ability to drive 4x4 trucks towing trailers carrying UTV spraying equipment to off- road remote locations.

Schedule: 4-10 hour work week Mon. - Thurs. 5- 8 hour work week Mon. - Fri.
