Description:
The Geology Technician provides technical support for mineral resource management projects on public lands. This position assists professional geologists and project managers with field inspections, compliance monitoring, and data collection related to mining and mineral development. Work focuses on ensuring that mineral operations meet federal requirements and environmental standards. This position is ideal for students or early-career professionals seeking hands-on experience in geology, mineral resource management, and public land management. Interns are expected to demonstrate strong leadership qualities and the ability to work independently in remote field settings with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct field inspections of active and inactive mineral sites, including pits and mines.
- Document site conditions and verify compliance with federal mineral contracts and reclamation requirements.
- Conduct volumetrics of extracted material and assess ground disturbance using field and GPS tools.
- Assist with inventory of mineral resources and mapping of disturbed areas using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.
- Photograph and document site features for compliance records.
- Support enforcement actions by preparing inspection notes and summaries for review by professional staff.
- Maintain field equipment, vehicles, and safety gear for effective operations.
- Enter and verify data in databases; assist in preparing compliance reports.
- Promote safe work practice and follow agency field safety protocols.
Qualifications:
- Must be age 18+
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest or coursework in geology, earth science, environmental science, or related fields.
- Ability to identify common rock types, minerals, and geologic features, or willingness to learn in the field.
- Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather and rugged terrain.
- Familiarity with GPS, GIS, and basic mapping techniques is a plus.
