Description:
Kanarra Falls is a stunning slot canyon hike located in the Town of Kanarraville about 20 minutes south of the SUU campus. Applicant will need their own vehicle.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility is to hike the Kanarra Falls trail once a week. This is a 4-mile round-trip hike, rated moderate to strenuous due to the fact that you will be hiking in water. With an elevation gain of 700 feet, the hike typically takes 3 to 4 hours. Be prepared to get wet, as you will be walking in ankle to knee-deep water for 2 miles. The water can be very cold in the spring and fall.
Recommended gear includes sturdy waterproof hiking boots, neoprene socks, and hiking poles. Candidates must be in good physical condition and able to lift up to 50 pounds comfortably.
Key tasks include:
- Taking weekly water temperature readings.
- Assisting with trail marking and clearing.
- Removing makeshift rope and log ladders, rock dams, and debris.
- Erasing graffiti, picking up trash, and human waste.
- Covering side trails.
- Maintaining the ladder.
- Rehabilitating eroded areas.
- Cleaning the pit toilet.
- Assisting other hikers and or reporting incidents.
You may also be asked to assist with additional trail work alongside the SUU trail crew. Additional hours may be available depending on project needs.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Must have experience in trail maintenance and training in the use of chainsaws and trail maintenance tools. (Chainsaw training is available through the IIC).
- Must be in good physical condition and able to lift 50 pounds comfortably.
Schedule: One day a week for 4 hours, intern can choose what day and time works best for them!
