Description:
The Visitor Use Management Technician supports data collection, analysis, and public engagement efforts that help National Park units and other public lands manage visitor use and protect natural and cultural resources. This position focuses on understanding patterns of visitor behavior, access, and experience to inform management decisions that balance recreation opportunities with resource protection. The role provides hands-on experience in visitor use monitoring, data-driven planning, and public land management, offering valuable skills in applied social science and field-based research.
Responsibilities:
- Collect and record visitor use data through observation, automated traffic counters, and surveys.
- Assist with the deployment, maintenance, and calibration of automated counters and monitoring equipment following established protocols.
- Support analysis and reporting of visitation trends, crowding, and visitor flow patterns.
- Provide accurate information about recreation opportunities, park rules, permits, and safety to park visitors. Explain research objectives, promote responsible recreation, and gather feedback from park visitors.
- Contribute to mapping and data visualization of visitor use trends using GIS or other software tools.
- Enter, clean, and organize field data to ensure quality and consistency.
- Collaborate with park staff, social scientists, and data analysts to interpret findings.
- Support the development of management strategies for trailheads, parking areas, campgrounds, and high-use zones.
- Prepare summary reports, infographics, and presentations that communicate data results to park managers.
- Perform fieldwork in varied outdoor conditions, often involving long days on trails or in high-traffic visitor areas. This position will require hiking on park trails at 8,000 feet above sea level.

Qualifications:
- Must be age 18+
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; enjoys working with the public.
- Interest in natural resources, parks, outdoor recreation, or public service.
- Basic computer and office skills (email, spreadsheets, document editing).
- Ability to remain courteous and professional in high-traffic or stressful situations.
- Ability to follow established procedures independently.
- Comfortable speaking in front of groups or leading short presentations.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in outdoor recreation or related fields preferred.
Schedule:
8 hour days, 5 days a week. Schedule may be variable (early/late).
