Overview

This position will have two distinct sets of duties, presenting interpretative programs to the public, and front-line responsibilities at the visitor center information desk. (Interpretation is connecting park resources with park visitors through a variety of techniques, which the intern will be trained in. It does not require proficiency in a foreign language.)

Responsibilities:

Duties will consist of the intern providing front line information, orientation, and interpretive services for visitors in the day-to-day operation of the park at the visitor center and various locations throughout the park. The intern will work with park interpreters developing and presenting a variety of programs (including geology talks/walks and junior ranger programs for youth groups), and orientation talks at the visitor center or other locations within the park. Interns will develop and present formal and informal interpretive talks, assist on guided hikes, and help with special events.

Visitor center information desk duties include answering questions, providing directions, recommending hiking trails, interacting with Junior Rangers, processing lost and found items, operating a 2-way radio, answering telephones/responding to messages, and other duties as required. Other duties may consist of roving on hiking trails and visiting viewpoints for the purpose of chatting with visitors, answering questions, and assisting the public so they can make the most of their visit to the park.

Qualifications:

  • This position requires a highly motivated, responsible, personable individual who may be interested in pursuing a career with the National Park Service.
  • Successful candidates must pass a background investigation.
  • Strong communication skills are an advantage for this internship, as is the ability to get along with others.
  • Bryce Canyon National Park provides a mentoring program for interns with different subject matter experts.
  • Interns will be provided interpretive and program building training within the park and will strengthen their communication skills throughout the internship.

Things unique about this location/position

Bryce Canyon, known for its amazing and colorful geologic hoodoos, sits atop the Paunsaugunt Plateau in south-central Utah. Elevation is 8000-9000 feet above sea level. Winter temperatures average lows in the mid-teens and highs in the mid-30s; summer temperatures average lows in the 50s and highs in the 80s.

It is 20-30 minutes to the nearest small grocery stores located in Tropic and Panguitch, and an hour-and-a-half to full services in Cedar City or Richfield. Most services are available in these towns.

Housing for interns is provided within the park, but having your own vehicle is highly recommended due to the distance between park housing and the visitor center, as well as for grocery stores, etc
