General Summary

This position will work to provide support activities for the Utah Center for Rural Health, specifically including the collegiate-level Rural Health Scholars program at Southern Utah University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Advise pre-health students on course selection, graduate entrance exam preparation, applying to graduate programs and academic issues.
  2. Serve as positive role model and mentor to undergraduate pre-health students.
  3. Answer phone and email inquiries regarding Rural Health Scholars, Southern Utah University, and general healthcare information.
  4. Manage and supervise undergraduate student employees (Peer Mentors) as needed.
  5. Communicate with key stakeholders, including prospective Rural Health Scholars students, family members, academic advisors, academic faculty, and university staff.
  6. Assist in training and development of Peer Mentors.
  7. Assist in instruction of UNIV 3000 advanced seminar courses and facilitate lectures as needed in topics such as test preparation, rural health issues, service, and leadership.
  8. Organize and send weekly update email to all Rural Health Scholars students.
  9. Grade and track items on Canvas, the online learning platform, as needed.
  10. Manage and update electronic items such as website, social media, online payment system, and Canvas.
  11. Understand SUU policies and procedures as related to budget, accounts receivable, and payroll.
  12. Serve as student advisor for collegiate organizations such as the Women Of Medicine Education Network (WOMEN), Rural Health Scholars Living Learning Community with University Housing, and the Southern Utah Chapter of the Rural Health Association as needed.
  13. Attend SUU recruitment and retention events to assist in program growth.
  14. Travel to other RHS campuses as needed across the state of Utah.
  15. Abide by privacy regulations and student rights according to FERPA.
  16. Assist in planning and organizing cultural immersion trips to domestic and international locations if needed.
  17. Seek out and promote local service opportunities for Rural Health Scholars students.
  18. Manage walk-in office traffic and direct individuals to appropriate resources.
  19. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  1. Currently or previously enrolled as a member of Rural Health Scholars
  2. Gone through the process of applying to a graduate healthcare program
  3. Experience in counseling, mentoring, or advising others
  4. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills including interpersonal, presentations, and public relations
  5. Technology skills including web, social media, computer applications, and presentation programs
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative
  7. Ability to work 15-20 hours per week during the academic year

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Interest in a career in health care, student affairs, or public policy
  2. Experience in career counseling in the health sciences
  3. Demonstrated commitment to higher education
  4. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, especially geographic diversity
  5. Familiarity with careers in healthcare
  6. Demonstrated commitment to service learning

Funding is contingent based on grant allocations.

Contacts Works with secondary, undergraduate, and graduate students. Collaborates with campus administrators and family members of students.

Working Conditions Some travel, weekends or evenings as necessary. May require in-state, out-of-state, and international travel for recruitment or service events.

Supervision or Direction Exercised This position may supervise and train students and volunteers who assist with activities and presentations.
