Description:

The successful candidate will work in a two person team to conduct extensive herpetological surveys within the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The primary focus of the position is to support an effort to survey incidence of reptiles and amphibians, with a focus on species of conservation concern, within the monument borders. Work will be conducted in remote and challenging locations and will necessitate extended periods of hiking and camping.

Qualifications:

Major duties at the full performance level include but are not limited to the following:

  • Works with the other field technician, Bureau of Land Management staff and principal investigator to formulate research objectives and means of accomplishing those objectives.
  • Provides support and participates with other team members to conduct herpetological surveys - including set-up and removal of survey equipment.
  • Collects, measures, and records biological, physical, environmental, and geographical data.
  • Operates and maintains, via SUU motorpool, a 4-wheel drive field vehicle.
  • Works weekends during the school year, and then 4-day weeks during the summer.
  • Camps in remote locations incident to necessary sampling locations.
  • Safely attends to live animals, including venomous snakes, in accordance with training received.
  • Effectively communicates with other staff members to ensure personal safety and success of the project.
