Description:

SUU Outdoors Base Camp serves as an information hub for Students, Faculty, Staff and campus visitors. The Center’s purpose, and that of a Base Camp Specialist, is to educate and inform visitors of upcoming opportunities for recreational pursuits, sponsor and present continuing educational clinics and provide quality rental equipment with a supportive and knowledgeable foundation. Base Camp Specialists are crucial to Base Camp operations and serve as a concierge to our Southern Utah campus, backyard and beyond.

This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of SUU Outdoors.

Essential functions include:

  • Greeting visitors and fielding general information questions
  • Completing rental and retail transactions
  • Informing visitors of upcoming activities, trips and events sponsored through Base Camp, the Rock Wall and/or Challenge Course.
  • Inform and educate visitors of areas in and around the Southern Utah area and the activities associated with those venues.
  • Provide excellent customer service

Other Responsibilities include:

  • Know the function, use, and design of SUU Outdoors rental equipment.
  • Be proactive in researching local and surrounding venues
  • Be knowledgeable of all University and SUU Outdoors policies and be willing to enforce and uphold them.
  • Provide knowledgeable customer service for a wide variety of services and programs.
  • Demonstrate proper use and care of equipment to rental customers.
  • Operate rental software, including payments and inventory management.
  • Process equipment reservations and trip registrations over the phone and in person.
  • Make decisions regarding lost, damaged, or dirty equipment and determine appropriate fines and handle other special circumstances.
  • Ensure that Base Camp is neat and presentable
  • Open and close the facility as directed.
  • Balance cash registers when required.
  • Process contracts and handle cash register settlements at closing.
  • Complete and be punctual to regularly scheduled shifts, trainings and meetings
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current Southern Utah University student in good academic standing.
  • Familiar with functions and maintenance of outdoor equipment.
  • Amiable and cheery disposition and ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Knowledge, or the ability to obtain knowledge, of local recreational venues which support activities including, but not limited to biking, rock climbing, camping, hiking, skiing and water sports. -Professional, dependable and trustworthy character.
  • Ability to work autonomously and in teams.
  • Current First Aid & CPR
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Google platform, Rental Essentials (preferred)
  • Proactive in job responsibilities and expectations
