The Student Reporter position at SUU News offers a dynamic opportunity for aspiring journalists to gain hands-on experience in news writing and reporting within a collegiate newsroom environment.

Qualifications:

  • Intern must attend weekly SUU News staff meetings to pitch story ideas or get story assignments and be in constant communication with editors.
  • Student reporter is responsible for conducting interviews, doing research, attending events, collaborating with photojournalists writing stories in a timely manner meeting hard deadlines.
  • Intern must work quickly to make edits to stories based on feedback from section editors and copy editors which sometimes requires working during odd hours to meet deadlines.
  • Learn and implement the Associated Press style of news writing, including the inverted pyramid, unique punctuation rules, and long-form feature styles.
  • Attend training in the Newsroom on news writing structure and AP style nuance.
  • Must have a good knowledge and understanding of English and love to write about a variety of topics from sports, news, outdoors, arts, and campus life.
  • Student reporter is able to move up to student section editor, editor-in-chief, and copy editor positions based on capabilities.
  • Student reporter must exhibit a high standard of journalistic professionalism including writing objectively, accurately, and fairly.
