Description:

We are seeking one or two motivated and dedicated Field Technicians majoring in Biology to join Dr. Xiaoben Jiang's team for fieldwork in Southwestern Utah. The research will involve collecting samples from hot springs for microbiome research in the field. The fieldwork is expected to take place from mid to late July through August, with an estimated duration of 1-2 weeks, depending on sample collection requirements.

Major Responsibilites include:

  • Collect samples from hot springs for microbiome analysis using aseptic techniques.
  • Drive a 4x4 truck or SUV to various field locations.

Additional Details:

  • The job will be outdoors in all weather conditions, involving walking variable distances and driving on backcountry roads (vehicles provided).
  • Compensation will be based on actual working hours.
  • This position offers valuable experience for students planning to pursue graduate studies in Microbial Ecology, Microbiology, Ecology, or Geochemistry.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience in ecological field methods or who have completed ecology courses.

  • For the months of July or August, the position will include hours each weekday, up to 40 hours per week. Assistants will be required to work Saturdays during the fall or spring semester and other hours during the week as available or willing, for up to 20 hours per week.

Qualifications:

  1. Must have completed Microbiology lecture and labs with a minimum grade of A-.
  2. Must possess a valid drivers license and be capable of driving a 4x4 truck or SUV. All technicians are required to complete SUU defensive driver training and other mandatory training before beginning fieldwork.
  3. Familiarity with Southwestern Utah road conditions is required.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen as per funding agency requirements.
  5. Must be older than 18 years, ideally older than 21.
