Description:

This internship is part of the Spring 2025 Professional Internship Program. To be eligible for the program you must:

  • Be enrolled as an SUU student during the course of the internship.
  • Have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Be willing to work 10 to 20 hours per week.
  • Provide thoughtful responses in your application.

Responsibilities are:

  • Produce news stories for SUU News and the University Journal
  • Attend weekly staff meetings to pitch story ideas or get story assignments from student editors
  • Maintain constant communication with editors to meet deadlines for editing and publication of their stories
  • Responsible for conducting interviews, doing research, attending events, collaborating with photojournalists and writing stories in a timely manner meeting hard deadlines
  • Work quickly to make edits to stories based on feedback from section editors and copy editors which sometimes requires working during odd hours to meet deadlines

Qualifications:

  • Must learn and implement the Associated Press style of news writing, including the inverted pyramid, unique punctuation rules and long-form feature styles
  • Required to attend trainings in the Newsroom on news writing structure and AP style nuance
  • Must have a good knowledge and understanding of English and love to write about a variety of topics from sports, news, outdoors, arts and campus life
  • Student reporters are able to move up to student section editor, editor-in-chief and copy editor positions based on capabilities
  • Student reporters must exhibit high standard of journalistic professionalism including writing objectively, accurately and fairly
