Description:

  • The Aces mission is to foster an authentic connection with every SUU student in a holistic manner to ensure successful and meaningful experiences, both inside and outside of the classroom, which ultimately contributes to college completion, successful careers, and fulfilled lives.
  • Aces oversee a group of 100-150 incoming students. Aces serve as a peer-mentor, advocate, and friend to these students with a goal of connecting them to SUU. Aces coach these first-year students on how to use resources, get involved on campus, tips on how to succeed, and many other things related to being a successful college student.
  • This mentorship will begin when a student pays their enrollment deposit and continues throughout the first-year. Regular communication, outreach, and meetings which occur between the Aces and their students take place throughout the summer, fall and spring.
  • Aces may also have a cohort of 100-130 second-year students and will send them weekly emails with important information and answer any questions they may have.
  • Aces work as part of the Student Onboarding and Retention (SOAR) office on campus. As such, Aces will be involved with and work at Thunder U and other SOAR events throughout the school year.
  • Aces also participate in many retention efforts across campus. Aces will be expected to participate in calling campaigns, registration efforts, work in The Nest (student help center) and many other activities to ensure that all SUU students receive the support they need to be successful at SUU.
  • Aces work 30 - 35 hours per week over the summer and 15-20 hours per week during the school year.
  • The Aces organization exists as a Student Leadership Group. However, being an Ace is a full-time job. Because of this it is expected that you adhere to the time commitment associated with this position. If you anticipate holding other leadership positions on campus please contact Ammon Harris before submitting an application. Not all positions on campus can work with being an Ace because of the time commitment associated with this position
  • A job with the Aces is a year long commitment. If you have other commitments, plans, or inclinations to work other jobs, internships, and/or other experiences during the year you plan to apply for the Aces position, please do not apply.

The following summer dates are required for all Aces to attend. Please consider these when applying:

  • May 6th-May 8th Opening Team Retreat
  • May 12th - May 23rd Opening Trainings
  • August 22nd - August 26th Fall Thunder U Prep

Qualifications:

  • Be in good standing with the university, both in conduct and academically.
  • To be an Ace students must maintain a GPA of 3.0
  • Be available to work for one year (May 2025-April 2026) If you cannot work the entire year for any reason, please do not apply.
  • Have a willingness to work hard, be coachable, have a positive attitude, and be a good team member.
  • Be humble, adaptable, and have a sincere desire to serve and help others.
  • Must be mature, professional, friendly, kind and welcoming of every student and create a sense of belonging for all.
  • Willingness to develop professionally. “Know-it-alls” need not apply.
  • Be willing to fail and grow from mistakes.
  • No previous campus experience is required.
  • Because of the summer time commitment it is not possible to be enrolled in in-person summer classes. If you have to take classes online in the summer, contact Ammon Harris before you apply.

  3. A Letter of Intent answering one of the following three questions. No more than 250 words with the title “Name - Letter of intent” (You will submit this in the “Cover Letter” portion of the application)

    • What will you do to make SUU a better place for incoming students?
