Description:

Under the direction of the Director of Learning and Visitor Experience, the K-12 Engagement Assistant will prioritize child and teen engagement through tours, STEAM Nights, Spring Breakout Kits, and Teen Art Camp, as well as assist with any additional outreach and partnerships pertaining to these programs and other museum engagement endeavors.

Duties and Responsibilities

K-12 and SUU Tours

  • Prepare exhibition specific discussion content, pertinent to all visitor ages and levels.
  • Assist supervisors with scheduling, relationship building, and communication as needed.
  • Oversee post-tour survey by tour attendees, specifically teachers and aides.
  • Meet with the Director of Learning and Visitor Experience to review feedback following each exhibit, sooner if necessary.
  • Assist with tour registration and requests.

STEAM Nights

  • Develop 15 minute activities for K-5 that integrate art with STEM.
  • Attend STEAM Nights and/or coordinate event coverage with Learning and Visitor Experience staff.
  • Track and report attendance.
  • Manage activity materials and communicate any purchasing needs to the Director of Learning and Visitor Experience.
  • Obtain travel authorizations through motor pool as needed.
  • Carry current driver’s license or coordinate transportation to programs.

Spring Break Out Kits

  • Develop two to three age appropriate art activities for take-home art kits that include detailed instructions and examples.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Learning and Visitor Experience and Marketing & Design for advertising.
  • Create materials list and communicate all purchasing needs to the Director of Learning and Visitor Experience.
  • Assemble art kits.
  • Host one to two open classrooms at SUMA during the week of Iron County spring break for the completion of Spring Break Out Kits.

Teen Art Camp (summer)

  • Assist the Director of Learning and Visitor Experience in Teen Art Camp Project Management, including.
  • Yearly theme and content development.
  • Collaboration with Marketing & Design.
  • Budget proposal and tracking.
  • Activity materials lists and purchasing.
  • Manage daily set-up and take-down and assist the teaching artist during the camp.
  • Risk Management requirements for working with minors.

Other museum engagement tasks

  • Assist with events, such as Day of the Dead, Art Auction, community days.
  • Assist with Sidekicks.
  • Assist with Front Desk duties.
  • Assist with Spring Breakout Kits.
  • Assist with rotations as needed.
  • Assist with offsite partnership programs.

Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable speaking to groups of children, teens, teachers, and SUU students.
  • Ability to create clear, age-appropriate activity guides and instructional content.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Forms).
  • Must be Eligible for Work Study.
  • Available to begin August 18th.
