Description:

The role of the tutor/mentor is to assist in providing an inclusive yet productive academic atmosphere for student-athletes in the Athletic Academic Center. This includes assisting student-athletes in becoming proficient in the specified academic course(s) as well as monitoring all student-athletes in the Academic Center. This will be accomplished through a variety of means, which may include helping students check in for study hall, explanation, clarification, and organization of course content. Tutor/mentors may also use techniques such as quizzing, questioning, and repetition and may be assigned specific student-athletes to meet individually on a weekly basis. Occasionally, a tutor/mentor may be asked to meet a student-athlete for a one-time appointment, be set up with a small study group, or asked to produce study/workshop material. Please note: Due to the supply and demand nature of our program, Academic Services cannot guarantee a minimum number of hours to any tutor.

Responsibilities

  • Assist student-athletes checking in to the study hall and monitor the work and productivity of student-athletes, periodically checking on individuals and groups to offer assistance.
  • Engage students in discussion of the course content and assist them in mastering material through various ethical means.
  • Be on time and prepared for each shift, tutoring session, and study groups.
  • Be familiar with the course syllabus, course assignments, and requirements of the class(es)
  • Follow departmental procedures for documenting sessions and communicating with Athletic Academic Staff
  • Adhere to highest standards of academic integrity set forth by the university’s student code of conduct, the WAC, and the NCAA

Qualifications:

  • Must be an SUU student
  • Must have at least 30 completed credits from an institution of higher learning
  • Have a “B” or above in subject area classes, “A” or better preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of subject matter and ability to effectively explain concepts
  • Must be responsible, professional, and have excellent communication skills
  • Experience working with large numbers of students
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
