Basecamp Specialist

SUU Outdoors at Southern Utah University is here to inspire the SUU community to engage, explore, and experience the world-renowned landscapes around campus through adventure, leadership, and development. Basecamp Attendants are responsible for the day-to-day operations at Basecamp and the Garage including customer service, equipment rental, equipment storage, and repair/maintenance of equipment. Attendents will lead LEAP events weekly and lead Challenge Course groups. Basecamp Attendants must be outgoing, friendly, and enthusiastic about the outdoors. They must have good written and verbal communication skills, possess patience, and provide excellent customer service.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current Southern Utah University student in good academic standing.
  • Must be familiar with the functions and maintenance of outdoor equipment.
  • A passion for exploration and adventure.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Know the function, use, and design of SUU Outdoors rental equipment.
  • Be knowledgeable of all University and SUU Outdoors policies and be willing to enforce and uphold them.
  • Provide knowledgeable customer service for a wide variety of services and programs.
  • Demonstrate proper use and care of equipment to rental customers.
  • Operate rental software, including payments and inventory management.
  • Process equipment reservations, group reservations, and trip registrations over the phone and in person.
  • Make decisions regarding lost, damaged, or dirty equipment and determine appropriate fines and handle other special circumstances.
  • Ensure that the rental shop and Basecamp is neat and presentable, with equipment stored in the appropriate places and in the appropriate way.
  • Open and close the facility as directed.
  • Balance cash registers when required.
  • Process contracts and handle cash register settlements at closing.
  • Lead LEAP groups
  • Lead Challenge Course, Climbing wall and Rappel station groups
  • Other duties as assigned.

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Regularly scheduled shifts at Basecamp and the Garage, maximum of 20 hrs/week during Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Maximum 40 hrs/week during the Summer Semester
  • LEAP is often off campus and will require meeting groups at local trail heads.
  • Scheduled in-services and meetings.
  • Scheduled classes, programs, and events.
