Description:
This position provides an opportunity for a student to work one-on-one with a child between the ages of 1 and 3 years who may have developmental delays or other individualized needs. The intern will support the child's growth and development through play-based interactions within the classroom environment while fostering a positive, nurturing relationship.
This position offers valuable hands-on experience for students pursuing careers in early childhood education, special education, child development, psychology, social work, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, or related fields.
This internship is part of the Fall 2024 Professional Internship Program. To be eligible for the program you must:
- Be enrolled as an SUU student during the course of the internship.
- Have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Be willing to work 10 to 20 hours per week.
- Provide thoughtful responses in your application.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized, one-on-one support to a young child in the classroom.
- Engage the child in developmentally appropriate play and learning activities that promote social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.
- Collaborate with the lead teacher to create a safe, supportive, and enriching learning environment.
- Build positive relationships with the child and their family by communicating the child's progress, successes, and developmental goals.
- Observe and document the child's development and share relevant information with the classroom team.
- When appropriate, collaborate with outside professionals, such as Early Intervention providers, to support the child's individualized developmental goals.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while working with children, families, and community partners.
- Follow all program policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- Availability to work within the hours of 8-12.
- Experience working with young children in a childcare, preschool, or other early childhood setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of child development, developmental milestones, and Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP).
- Current enrollment in or interest in early childhood education, special education, child development, psychology, social work, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, or a related field.
