Position Summary
The Utah Health Scholars (UHS) Student Assistant serves as a peer leader, mentor, and representative of the Utah Health Scholars program. Student Assistants support the success and engagement of current and prospective UHS students while helping promote a strong culture of academic achievement, service, leadership, and professional development.
Student Assistants are expected to serve as positive role models and contribute to the UHS program through peer mentoring, student engagement, events, recruitment, academic support, and other program activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance to students regarding UHS course selection, UHS application and exit guidance, and support in UHS resource utilization.
- Support the Program Coordinator and Program Specialist in administrative tasks.
- Assist with recruitment and outreach activities for prospective UHS students.
- Help welcome and engage new UHS students and communicate the value, opportunities, and expectations of the UHS program.
- Support UHS events, guest speakers, workshops, and other student activities, including occasional evening or weekend events as needed.
- Represent UHS and Southern Utah University in a professional and positive manner when interacting with students, faculty, staff, prospective students, and community partners.
- Assist with student engagement initiatives designed to increase participation and involvement in UHS programs and activities.
- Serve as a student voice and provide feedback to UHS staff regarding student needs, experiences, and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist with appropriate program projects, administrative tasks, communications, and other activities as assigned by UHS staff.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality and demonstrate an understanding of student privacy and rights.
- Encourage high academic standards and personal and professional development among UHS students.
- Demonstrate leadership and take initiative beyond the responsibilities expected of general UHS participants.
- Work Schedule
- Student Assistants will generally work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year. Hours will vary based on program needs, student availability, events, and budget.
- Most Student Assistants will work during the fall and spring semesters. Limited summer hours may be available depending on program needs and funding.
- Some evening and weekend hours may be required for events and other UHS activities.
Qualifications:
- Must be a current member of Utah Health Scholars.
- Must be currently enrolled as a Southern Utah University student.
- Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study.
- Strong academic standing and a demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to multitask, take initiative, and complete assignments independently.
- Ability to represent Utah Health Scholars and Southern Utah University in a professional and positive manner.
- Commitment to supporting the academic, professional, and personal development of fellow UHS students.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous leadership, mentoring, tutoring, or peer-support experience.
- Experience participating in UHS events, service activities, healthcare experiences, or other extracurricular activities.
- Experience with public speaking, presentations, social media, communications, or event support.
- Familiarity with graduate or professional healthcare programs and the healthcare career preparation process.
