Orientation / Thunderbird Advice
My name is Ryan, and I was very nervous about not making friends my first year of college! Being from out of state, I was coming to SUU not knowing anyone, and that was the scariest thing. Little did I know, SUU has some of the friendliest, kindest, and fun people you will ever meet! Being away from my family for the first time was so hard, and both the students and faculty have made SUU feel like my second home. If you are feeling stressed about making friends at SUU, or are leaving home for the first time, let me give you some tips to help you out that helped me.
Smile: SUU’s campus is the perfect size. You will find yourself seeing so many familiar faces, while also seeing new faces each and every day! This brings a new opportunity to make friends constantly. The people here at SUU are so friendly that all it takes to make a friend is to smile! You will find that people will smile back almost every time, and the more often you see them, the more hello’s turn into conversations and conversations turn into friendships. Always remember that most of the time, the people you pass by are also looking to make new friends, and are most likely just as nervous to say hello as you are.
Get involved!: This is easily some of the best advice I could ever give you. Getting involved on campus is what I can accredit to the best experiences I have had at SUU. Joining a club or organization gives you the opportunity to gain leadership experience, allows you to grow as a person, and offers you diverse friendships that you wouldn’t find anywhere else! The connections you make in these clubs and organizations will last a lifetime, and will make your college experience a truly unforgettable one.
Be brave: College was the first time I was ever “truly” on my own. Trust me, it’s a mix of excited and overwhelming emotions. One thing I was really scared about was feeling homesick, and having to learn how to do things on my own. From my own experience, I can tell you that your relationship with your family won’t change! No matter how many miles are between you, they will still be your #1 fan! With knowing that you will always have some support behind you, college is the perfect time to start taking leaps out of your comfort zone. Keep taking chances and every opportunity to grow as a person.
Home is where the heart is: Leaving friends and family behind is a truly scary feeling, but I am going to tell you something that I hope sticks with you forever. If you cherish the friendships you have made and the memories you have made with them, no amount of distance can break them! Your communication with them might slow down to only a few texts here and there, but as long as you are making an effort to stay updated with their lives, your friendships will last.
That’s all for now, T-Birds! I am so excited for you to take the time to make your SUU experience the best experience possible! Be brave, be confident, and be YOU!
